Next-gen tech at CES 2021

Wednesday, February 17th, 2021 by

At the start of each year, we look forward to the latest and greatest gadgets revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) – a global showcase of breakthrough technologies . In 2021, this world-renowned exhibition had to adapt and do things a little differently – but fortunately, the CES team are no strangers to innovation!

We’ve rounded up some of our favourite picks from the first-ever, all-digital CES 2021 for your viewing pleasure. Could these new inventions and developments set a new standard for modern living? That’s up to you to decide. Let’s dive right in!

Lasso closes the loop on recycling

Lasso is a domestic appliance that kick-starts the recycling process right there in your home. It accepts plastic, glass and metal recyclables and takes care of steam cleaning, label removal and grinding them up to be deposited in a storage bin. When the bins get full, it triggers a notification to schedule a curbside pickup from the parent company, who’ll recycle the materials with a closed-loop guarantee. That means the goods won’t end up in landfill or the ocean (nice!). We’re excited to see how this technology could change the way we recycle – the company is already looking at future developments to allow the Lasso to also take care of soft plastics, paper and food scraps.

PopSockets MagSafe PopGrip ditches adhesive

As smartphone screens grow ever larger, they became a little difficult to hold – even for adult-sized hands. For many years, adhesive handles such as PopSockets’ PopGrips were a popular solution to get a comfortable grip on your phone. However, the advent of the iPhone 12 with whiz-bang features such as wireless charging makes a stick-on accessory a lot less attractive. Fortunately, there’s MagSafe: an array of magnets built right into the iPhone 12 to allow wireless power transfer and magnetic accessory attachment. Slated to launch later this year, the PopSockets MagSafe PopGrip will pop on and off your iPhone in a snap – no adhesive needed! Ah, magnets – is there anything you can’t solve?

Thinking outside the box with LG’s CineBeam Projector

If you’ve ever checked out the market for 4K TVs, you’ll know that the bigger the screen, the more eye-watering the price. So, how can you get a 4K Ultra High Definition home theatre setup without breaking the bank? Ditch the TV! Already an industry leader in laser projection tech, LG’s latest 4K UHD Laser Smart Home Theater CineBeam Projector is capable of projecting images up to a whopping 300 inches. It also has some very smart features like Adaptive Contrast and Dark Room/Bright Room modes to make sure you always get exceptional picture quality.

B-BOX makes home beekeeping easy

Surprise! Bet you didn’t expect to hear about bees in CES 2021 but people were certainly buzzing about the B-BOX. This intelligently designed hive is capable of operating in a space of just one square metre, making it an appealing option for home and urban beekeeping. The B-BOX has a unique system that ensures all bees will exit the harvestable honeycomb areas before you open them up for collecting, which means you won’t need a smoker or protective clothing. You can find out more about how it works in this video. We say the more bees, the better! Just be sure to check out the beekeeping regulations in your state or territory before you get on board, as you’ll most likely need to be registered.

A stress-cancelling wearable from Cove

Most wearables we hear about are tiny smartphones or fitness trackers. However, the Cove has a different purpose in mind, which is literally calming down your mind. That’s right – this funky piece of headgear is designed to help you de-stress with daily, 20-minute sessions. It uses gentle vibrations behind your ears to activate the part of your brain that regulates anxiety. Over 90% of participants in a 30-day study reported improved sleep quality and reduced stress symptoms. Even a single session is said to deliver the same benefits as meditation, so the Cove may be the help you need if you’re struggling to reach that zen state au naturel.

Hex Home has a new take on WiFi security

We all know WiFi is the catchy name to wirelessly connect two devices. However, the Hex Home harnesses the power of WiFi for a different purpose: to detect motion in an area by monitoring the disruptions in the waves of WiFi it transmits. This innovative take on home security can cover an area of up to 1,500 square feet with just three plug-in devices, which is way easier to set up than a full suite of traditional sensors and motion detectors. The sensitivity can even be adjusted to stop any false alarms from your pet cat or a roaming Roomba.

Shower Power brings eco-friendly tunes to your bathroom

When you think of Hydropower, you may be thinking of a hydroelectric dam or a good ol’ fashioned water wheel. Well, think smaller! The accessory makers at Ampere have developed the Shower Power, an itty-bitty Bluetooth speaker that’s powered by (you guessed it) the water running through your shower. Waterproof and compatible with most plumbing, the Shower Power attaches to your showerhead and connects wirelessly to your smartphone or tablet. That means you can get your shower karaoke going while your expensive devices are a safe distance from the splash zone. Best of all? The plastic parts are made of 100% recycled ocean plastic.
