20 Movies For Days When It’s Too Cold To Go Outside

Monday, June 27th, 2022 by

It’s a Movie Frenzy! From 24 – 30 June, there are over 130 movies to rent for just $2.99 each in the Fetch Movie Store.

Steaming hot chocolates, comfy sweaters, roast dinners. There’s a lot to love about the rainy months of the year – except, maybe, going outside. So as the temperature plummets and the sky goes grey, lean into the better parts of winter with a cozy night in – complete, of course, with a movie or two.

From snow-kissed rom-coms to thrillers that will chill you to the bone, we’ve rounded up a collection of films on Fetch to keep you entertained when the cold weather hits.

Embrace the Cold

Knives Out (2019)

It’s Daniel Craig, but not as you know him. Our super-spy swaps shaken martinis for Cluedo-style sleuthing after Harlan Thrombey, a wealthy mystery novelist, dies in suspicious circumstances after his 85th birthday party. A wonderfully shot whodunnit (with some equally excellent winter sweaters).

While You Were Sleeping (1995)

A young Sandra Bullock plays Lucy – a down-on-her-luck transit officer in chilly Chicago who pulls her longtime crush, Peter, out from the path of an oncoming train. At the hospital, with Peter in a coma, his family assume Lucy is his fiancée… even though she’s never actually spoken to him. Comedic chaos ensues.

I, Tonya (2017)

Olympic figure skating, Oregon accents, and one big question: what went down between Tonya Harding and her rival Nancy Kerrigan in the months before the 1994 Winter Olympics? An award-winning take on one of the biggest sporting scandals of the 90s.

Harry Potter Series (2001 – 2011)

Add to the Chill

The Mountain Between Us (2017)

Stranded on a mountain after a tragic plane crash, two strangers – a journalist (Kate Winslet) and surgeon (Idris Elba) – must work together to survive the perilous, snow-covered terrain of Utah’s High Uintas Wilderness. Thrilling, terrifying, enthralling.

Snowpiercer (2013)

A sci-fi film unlike any other you’ve seen. After a second ice age, all human survivors have retreated from the frozen planet to reside within an enormous train, divided into strict classes. Directed by Bong Joon-ho, the brilliant mind behind the 2019 tour-de-force Parasite.

The Hateful Eight (2015)

A blood-splattered murder mystery set in the winter of 19th Century Wyoming. As with any of Tarantino’s masterpieces, prepare for exuberant violence, a superb score, and Samuel. L. Jackson. Not one for the whole family to enjoy, but an entertaining night in for the over-18s.

The Grey (2011)

Liam Neeson is in top form in this frosty survivalist epic. He stars as Ottway, a sharpshooter hired by an Alaskan oil refinery to keep away wolves and bears, who becomes a victim of a storm that sends his plane crashing into the unforgiving wilderness.

Warming Family-favourites

Beauty & The Beast (2017)

Catchy songs. A nostalgic tale. A beautiful (yet slightly terrifying) provincial winter castle. What’s not to love? It’s also Emma Watson’s third appearance on this list so we’ll just go ahead and crown her Queen of Winter Flicks.

Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (2005)

When it feels like the cold is lasting forever, spare a poor thought for the citizens of Narnia who, under the rule of the White Witch, really were trapped in 365 days of winter (but sadly never Christmas). Join Peter, Edmund, Susan, and Lucy as they journey through the wardrobe for one epic adventure.

Abominable (2019)

Cool Runnings (1993)

In 1988, a sprinter is just about to give up on his sporting dream when an idea hits him: a Jamaican bobsled team. They train under the sunny skies of the Caribbean before competing at the Calgary Winter Olympics, much to the astonishment of competitors (and themselves). Based on a true story.

Ice Age (2002)

Nothing says winter like an actual Ice Age. The film universe now consists of five movies, but the original holds a special place in our heart as it was our first introduction to three sub-zero heroes: Manny the Wooly Mammoth, Sid the (talkative) sloth, and Diego the Sabre Tooth Tiger.

Thaw Out

Palm Springs (2020)

Wedding guest Nyles (Andy Samberg) is stuck in a time loop. Of course, there are worse places to experience a day over-and-over again than a desert resort, but it does get lonely. So, when fellow party guest Sarah (Cristin Milioti) gets stuck too after they kiss one night, the world’s most bizarre love story begins.
