CommsDay Melbourne October 2011 Speech about the NBN

On 11th October 2011, I spoke at the CommsDay Melbourne Congress event about some of the competition related challenges that exist around the NBN.

These challenges focus in practice on actions that the ACCC should, in my view, be taking in order to safeguard and augment the Long Term Interests of End Users.

Price Squeeze Explained

Those who follow developments in the Australian Internet industry will be aware that many Internet Service providers and their customers are currently suffering the effects of another ‘Telstra Price Squeeze’ in geographic areas of Australia where Telstra holds a monopoly on ADSL broadband services supply.

However, those outside of the Internet service provider industry may be understandably unclear on what this is, what it means, and why it matters.

Where this is mentioned, it can be frequently misunderstood by consumers to mean that providers are just ‘crying poor’ or ‘not trying hard enough’ – that its nothing but an exercise in sour grapes.

It is none of those things.

Price Squeeze Update

Those who follow developments in the Australian Internet industry will be aware that providers and consumers are currently suffering the effects of another ‘Telstra Price Squeeze’ in ‘monopoly’ ADSL geographic areas

This is an update on the current status of that price squeeze, and an indication of interim plan changes that are coming up for Internode customers while the process continues toward full resolution.
